1968's Planet of the Apes dabbled in all kinds of risks. It was an endeavor into a novel genre, with an ambitious story and one of the biggest leaps in make up and practical effects of the time. Not to mention that marketing a movie like that made producers more than a little nervous... Little did they know, an Ape Mania was around the corner, and the first film was just the beginning.
